Description

Some spaces invite us to stand in awe of stories told by others while other encourage us to share from our own stories. An ice hotel is an awesome, cold, sanitized, unfamiliar space that has been created by experts and frozen in time for the education and entertainment of visitors. A p-patch is a messy space to which everyone brings their ideas, gifts and hopes and works together to promote growth and provide nourishment. These two spaces support dramatically different roles for participants and experts. In this workshop we will explore the roles of learners and disciplinary experts in a classroom. Facilitators will describe ice hotels and p-patches of physics learning. What aspects of classrooms and curricula promote or inhibit learning environments in which everyone can contribute? Participants will share from their own teaching and learning experiences. This workshop will include a free metaphorical field trip to an ice-hotel and a p-patch.
