Jacob and Florence DeShazer embarking for Japan, 1948

Jacob DeShazer, Doolittle Raider and prisoner of war, returned to Japan after World War II to share God’s message of love and forgiveness that he found in prison with the nation that held him prisoner. He was joined in his work spreading the Gospel in Japan by his wife, Florence DeShazer, and the two evangelized to the Japanese people from 1949 to 1977.

This collection of photographs, correspondence, and news items tells the story of the DeShazers and their love for God and the people of Japan. It was collected by Hulda Andrus (Jacob’s mother), Alice Matheny (Florence’s mother), and Carol Aiko DeShazer Dixon (Jacob and Florence’s eldest daughter), and the materials have been digitized and made available here with the permission of the DeShazer family.
