Description
A college student newspaper not only serves to inform the campus community about events but also provides a unique student-centered perspective on a wide variety of topics. In the classroom, this primary source can be used as a teaching tool to enrich the curriculum, stimulate discussion, and enhance critical thinking. The lightning presentation will focus on an active learning exercise developed for African American Studies courses. Articles, images, and advertisements from the student newspaper are used to explore issues of race, including Japanese incarceration during World War II, blackface, and diversity on campus. This activity can be easily adapted to other courses and topics.
