Location

Cremona 201

Keywords

Day of Common Learning

Description

This presentation is a feminist critical content analysis of recent Children's Choice Award-winning picture books (books that children themselves select as the best stories published in a given year). In many stories and illustrations, male literacy practices are seen and told with a deficit lens, especially when males are in the presence of female teachers and male authority figures. This presentation will conclude with implications for classroom teaching practices that allow young students to read against texts and create healthier constructs of gender.
