The DeShazers return by ship to the United States for furlough, landing in San Francisco in April 1955. They spend the summer in Oregon with Jacob's family and in Iowa with Florence's family. In September 1955, the DeShazers move to Wilmore, Kentucky, so that Jacob can attend Asbury Theological Seminary. Jacob earns a Masters degree from Asbury in 1958. The DeShazer's fifth child, daughter Ruth, is born in 1958.
