The DeShazers return to the United States for a furlough in 1963. They make their home in Salem, Oregon, before finding out that the Free Methodist Mission Board wants them to stay in the United States for several years before returning to Japan. To support themselves, the DeShazers buy a farm in Gervais, Oregon, since Jacob still enjoys farming. They move from Salem to Gervais in the summer of 1965. Jacob and Florence attend the 25th anniversary Doolittle Reunion at San Francisco in April 1967. The DeShazers are called back to Japan and leave Oregon in the summer of 1967.
