Description
Veterans discharged from a psychiatric hospitalization are 12 times more likely to die by suicide particularly within three months post-discharge. Our systematic literature review aims to synthesize research on intervention efficacy for reducing suicide risk in veterans and service members following a hospitalization. A search was conducted using PsychINFO, PubMed, MedLine, and Cochran Collection using “suicide” AND (“veteran” OR “military”) AND (“inpatient” OR “psychiatric hospitalization”) AND (“discharge” OR “release”). CBT and Motivational Interviewing were most effective at decreasing risk. Caring Contacts delivered with personalized contact were more effective than email or text. Outpatient sessions post-discharge decreased ideation and rehospitalization likelihood.
