Description

LGBTQ+ individuals have higher suicide rates than heterosexuals. Bisexual and transgender people present elevated rates of NSSI compared to other identities. NSSI is a risk factor for future suicide attempts. Undergraduate students (N = 1,994) with a lifetime history of NSSI completed self-report questionnaires including sexual orientation, NSSI severity, and suicide risk. An ANOVA demonstrated main effects of sexual orientation and NSSI severity on suicide risk. Bisexual individuals had the highest suicide risk. High NSSI severity was also associated with the highest suicide risk. There was no significant interaction effect. Findings suggest LGBTQ+ identity and high NSSI severity are distinctly important factors of suicide risk.
