Description
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore main characteristics of international or non-Chinese faculty members working in leading universities and what roles they played in their institutions. By analyzing national policies and institutional strategies, the first section of this study discusses the background in which international faculty members have been increasingly recruited and employed in Chinese leading universities. The second section identifies the main characteristics of international faculty members in several case study universities by discipline, gender, academic rank, country of origins, etc. The third section argues what specific roles these international faculty members played in their positions based on major findings from author’s interviews with them. The study concludes by presenting key features of international faculty members working in Chinese leading universities, issues facing them and implications for research, policy and practice.
